Public Holidays

The public holidays for New Zealand are:
New Year 1-2 January
Waitangi Day
(New Zealand’s national holiday)
6 February
Otago Anniversary 23 March
(however, it is celebrated on either the 3rd or 4th Monday of March depending on year)
Good Friday / Easter Monday Vary from Mid March to Early April
(based on the phase of the moon)
Anzac Day
(commemorating New Zealand’s war contributions)
25 April
Queen’s Birthday 1st Monday in June
Labour Day 4th Monday in October
Christmas Day 25 December
Boxing Day 26 December

While many businesses, banks and government departments will be closed on these days, the only days when normal retail must be shut are Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, Good Friday and Anzac Day Morning. Essential services will be available every day.

Normal retail hours are 8.30 AM to 5.00 PM Monday to Friday. New Zealand has seven day retail, with many shops open through the weekend. However, in smaller towns many shops may be closed on Sunday or even Saturday.
